Orange is the New Black: Other Shows to Watch if you Liked!

by Evil Jenji

If I define Orange Is the New Black for someone don’t know the series, I would say it’s about very interesting people, full of flaws and qualities, that you never met because they are far from your social circle, but that if you had the opportunity to know in depth you would certainly fall in love. One thing for sure, we human beings love to known strange people, different places, stories with new perspectives. I am an OITNB orphan and I saw a lot on streaming before making this list for you. Some series have a lot in common with Orange, others if you read the synopsis, you will not notice the similarity at first. They will all have strong women, in search of empowerment, strangers, with defects and qualities capable of making you fall in love about them. I watched them all. If one isn’t on my list, it’s because I probably didn’t get a chance to watch it. Please feel free to post other suggestions in the comments.

suggestions for Orange is the New Black fans

1- WEEDS

The series follows Nancy’s life as she gets drawn into the criminal system, develops a client base, starts a front to hide her selling, creates her own strain of weed called MILF, and relocates her family to stay out of jail and protect her children. It was Jenji Kohan’s first success, and everything that belongs to Jenji Kohan maintains certain characteristics, such as the non-obvious humor. You will see many actors that we love in Orange, which is already an excellent reason to watch.

2- RUSSIAN DOLL

Russian Doll follows a woman named Nadia on her journey as the guest of honor at a seemingly inescapable party one night in New York City. She dies repeatedly, always restarting at the same moment at the party, as she tries to figure out what is happening to her. It is the series that shows Nicky from OITNB before being arrested. AHAHHAHAH is my invention, but this could be the synopsis perfectly. Natasha Lyonne composes the character in a very similar way, but who cares, we love it!

3- GLOW

Inspired by the short-lived but beloved show from the 80s, GLOW — aka Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling –tells the fictional story of Ruth Wilder (Alison Brie), an out-of-work, struggling actress in 1980s Los Angeles who finds one last chance for stardom when she’s thrust into the glitter and spandex world of women’s wrestling. Another show by Jenji Kohan. I love Glow, so many strange and different people, and still with soundtracks from the 80’s. It’s a lot of charm together! But Netflix killed the series during the pandemic. It was absurd. Lack of respect for fans. But don’t stop watching it, it’s worth it.

4- VIS-A-VIS

Macarena Ferreiro is a young naive woman who falls in love with her boss and, because of him, commits several accounting manipulation and misappropriation crimes. She is accused of four tax crimes, and consequently she is imprisoned at the Cruz del Sur Prison as a precautionary measure with very high bail set. She has to face the emotional shock that being in jail means to her, as well as the complicated relationship between the inmates. If you miss Orange, you will like it, because Vis-a-vis copies Orange in some situations in a discreet way, but without the same intelligence. And vis-a-vis is definitely not a comedy, and it is more violent. The main asset of the series is the main cast, with Najwa Nimri and Alba Flores (Money Heist). But vis-a-vis did a spin-off, and that’s what matters. In my opinion, he was more considerate of those who liked the series.

5- GOOD GIRLS

The series follows three suburban Michigan mothers, two of whom are sisters, who are having a hard time trying to make ends meet. They are tired of having everything taken away from them so they decide to pull off an unlikely heist by robbing a supermarket, only to discover that they’re in for more than they bargained. The main trio is very charismatic, and they get involved in every mess. I’m not going to tell you much to avoid spoilers! and has the participation of Jackie Cruz in one of the seasons.

6- LITTLE FIRES EVERYWHERE

Little Fires Everywhere is a 2017 novel by American author Celeste Ng. It is her second novel and takes place in Shaker Heights, Ohio, where Ng grew up. The novel is about two families living in 1990s Shaker Heights who are brought together through their children. It features Witherspoon and Washington as mothers from different socioeconomic backgrounds. It’s a fantastic series, very well done, incredible script. One of the best series released in 2020 in my opinion. It is not like Orange, but you will find a lot of talent there.

7- KILLING EVE

The series follows Eve Polastri (Sandra Oh), a British intelligence investigator tasked with capturing psychopathic assassin Villanelle (Jodie Comer). As the chase progresses, the two develop a mutual obsession. I loved! especially the first few seasons! She was created by the same writer / actress often awarded by Fleabag – Phoebe Mary Waller-Bridge. And the two leading actresses are a show! And there is, Sandra Oh, and we all love Sandra Oh.

8- GIPSY

Gypsy is an American psychological thriller streaming television series created by Lisa Rubin for Netflix. Naomi Watts stars as Jean Holloway, a psychologist who secretly infiltrates the private lives of her patients. Billy Crudup co-stars as her husband Michael. The first season comprises 10 episodes and was released on June 30, 2017. If you like psychology and a little suspense, it will be the ideal show. I love the actress Naomi Watts, how about you? I promise you won’t regret it.

9- POSE

Pose is an American drama television series about New York City’s African-American and Latino LGBTQ and gender-nonconforming drag ball culture scene in the 1980s and, in the second season, early 1990s. Featured characters are dancers and models who compete for trophies and recognition in this underground culture, and who support one another in a network of chosen families known as Houses. I think Pose is a revolutionary series, and it shows a story that has never been told before, about transsexuals in the early AIDS era. The series breaks down several barriers in this regard. I think it is fundamental for those who want to understand more about this.

10- YOU ME HER

You Me Her is an American–Canadian comedy-drama television series that revolves around a suburban married couple who are entering a three-way romantic relationship, otherwise known as a polyamorous relationship. The series is set in Portland, Oregon and was created by John Scott Shepherd. Just sit back and have fun, these are short, easy-to-watch episodes. You don’t have to think too much. The situation is strange and unusual. The trio of actors is very friendly, it’s good fun without much pretension.

Orange is the New Black is irreplaceable, but we can try to have fun while the Spin-off doesn’t arrive. I’m sure this will happen one day. My second dream after the spin-off is to interview Jenji Kohan. If she’s reading this, here’s the message! I never understood why artists move mountains to speak on a popular website. The world has changed people, just like people say to value small businesses, I mean, value small websites. I produce this site with love, competence and a lot of willpower. Believe me, I don’t get anything for this. Good week!
