What strikes me most about Orange is the New Black is its cast, not only for its diversity but for its talent! Responsible is Jennifer Euston, who has a trained eye to find people who act naturally, feeling very comfortable in the character. This was probably one of the most important reasons for the series’ success worldwide. After OITNB, some actors took the opportunity to achieve even better opportunities. They really launched themselves to world stardom! I can’t talk about the whole cast (because there are a lot of cases), but here I separated the actresses that I think the evolution was more evident. Orange has completely changed the perspective of some careers. And we are all very proud to witness this turn point. Let’s see if you agree with my choices.
Orange is the New Black is a Great Stage for Talent
Danielle Brooks -She sings, actually she sings a lot. Brooks made her Broadway debut in the 2015 revival of The Color Purple as Sofia. The musical opened on December 10, 2015, at the Bernard B. Jacobs. Brooks received good notices for her performance and received a nomination for the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. In June 2019, she played Beatrice in The Public Theater’s production of Much Ado About Nothing, receiving a Drama League Award nomination for her performance. You may be impressed with Mahalia Jackson’s gospel career after watching “Robin Roberts Presents: Mahalia,” but you’ll be bowled over by Danielle Brooks ’performance as the music legend.
Uzo Aduba- Uzo is really the big star of OITNB. She has an incredible acting ability! She won many awards for her performance at OITNB, helped to give visibility to the show. We saw someone become a star in front of the cameras! I’ve written a lot about it here. Take a look by clicking here. In 2020, she played Shirley Chisholm in the Hulu miniseries Mrs. America, for which she won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie and the Critics’ Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Movie/Miniseries.
Natasha Lyonne – Lyonne started her career as a child, and has many roles in successful films. But from Orange is the New Black, She expanded her acting behind the camera as well. This New York girl is finally seeing her talent widely applauded. She created, acted and directed Russian Doll. Her performance in the 2019 Netflix series has been praised as “astonishing”.Alan Sepinwall of Rolling Stone called it “brilliant”.The series as a whole received 13 Emmy nominations including Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Lyonne’s performance as Nadia Vulvokov, and Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series.
Samira Wiley– Samira’s role in Orange was punctual and striking. Her death at the end of the fourth season was remembered during the show’s 7 seasons. Her memorable performance took her to another series, where she would finally earn due recognition. In the Hulu drama series The Handmaid’s Tale (2017–present), she won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series.
Laverne Cox – Laverne led the revolution in show business. It marked an era and will be remembered forever. Her role as Sophia Burset on the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black, becoming the first transgender person to be nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award in any acting category. His fight against prejudice against transgender people has opened many doors in the world of entertainment. Very fair! Cox was executive producer of the documentary Disclosure: Trans Lives on Screen, which premiered on Netflix on January 27, 2020.
Dascha Polanco – In 2018, Polanco had a recurring role in The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, and in 2019, she had a recurring role in Netflix series, Russian Doll and When They See Us. She has made prominent characters in successful films. She participated in The Irishman (Martin Scorsese) with Robert De Niro and Al Pacino for example.

We couldn’t write a story about OITNB actresses without Laura Prepon and Taylor Schilling. They brought life to the most important characters according to the fans. The impact was so strong that it was taking a while for them to break free from Alex Vause and Piper Chapman.
Laura Prepon – Laura, who entered OITNB as one of the only established stars, and ended OITNB as one of the series’ most outstanding characters. Like Alex Vause she took to the podium as queen of the LGBT world. Laura after Orange is the New Black is focused on her family and her career as a cookbook writer. After having her second child, affectionately called Taylor Jr. on social media (She never revealed her son’s real name), Prepon recently launched her kitchen accessories brand. We do not know if she abandoned her artistic career, but something tells me that she is just waiting for a great opportunity, such as the range is the New Black Spin-Off.
Taylor Schilling – Taylor Schilling is a mystery. After OITNB, Taylor often choses secondary roles in low-budget films. We don’t really know why. The choices of the characters she plays are often questionable (at least in my opinion). I sincerely hope that big projects appear for her. Taylor is an incredible actress, but has not yet had a protagonist role as she deserves. I think that in the first place Taylor needs to exorcise her own demons. But out here her fans are rooting for her a lot. Let it be clear, we cheer for the actress, not just the character Piper Chapman.
